A Stop Along The Way

Cody attended the annual young person's AA convention with his cousin this weekend. He worked at the bagel shop and then attended the meetings and gatherings there. He connected with others who have traveled the same path as he, although exploring different turns and opportunities. He was excited to get reacquainted with old friends from his inpatient program, and happy a connection still existed, and that they were doing well.

Late Sunday he got a call about a friend in the program who had relapsed over the weekend. This was a surprise, as most of us thought she was doing well. It has reminded me of how fragile the condition of recovery is, and how sudden addictive behaviors can reappear.

He who stands on tiptoe
doesn't stand firm.

He who rushes ahead
doesn't go far.

He who tries to shine
dims his own light.

He who defines himself
can't know who he really is.

He who has power over others
can't empower himself.

He who clings to his work
will create nothing that endures.

If you want to accord with the Tao,
just do your job,
then let go.
